18 teams, 4 countries and 4 days of non-stop water polo in an Olympic facility with a view of Barcelona

The iconic Montjuïc municipal swimming pool hosted for second year the 2nd edition of the Barcelona International Turbo Cup, a great setting where youths can show all their potential in water polo. Local teams, as well as other European teams coming from England, Italy, and Hungary participated in a tournament that comes in very handy to get ready for the start of the season. Besides, three teams with players from different parts of the world took part in the Turbo Cup as BIWPA teams. One of the main attractions of this year’s edition was the women’s category, with 6 teams.

Ferencvaros TC repeated as winners for second time. In the final, they faced Club Natació Barcelona, a squad diminished by the dropouts of players with commitments with the national team. CNB was able to defeat Ferencvaros TC before the final by 4-8, in a match marked by the harshness of the Hungarian team.

In the final, the final outcome was different and CNB paid for the lack of substitutes. The Catalan team played the whole tournament with 1 and 2 changes. In the final, it had to play more than one quarter with only one change. The Catalans ended up succumbing to the Hungarians, who clinched the final by 9-8. BIWPA Yellow team formed by members of several campus organized by BIWPA, beat NC Monza by 7-8, with a last-minute goal, and finished in 3rd place.

In the female category, Exeter Water Polo played an immaculate tournament, without conceding a single point on the way to the final. However, CN Sant Feliu managed to beat the English team in the penalty shootout, after a thrilling game and an endless series of penalties. In the end, 10 (15) – 10 (16) for Sant Feliu. In the bronze match, CN Catalunya defeated Dunaujvaros FVE (9-11), after having previously lost against the Hungarians (10-7). Dunaujvaros ended in a very meritorious 4th place, taking into account that they had some players of 10 years old.

Two players from CNB, regardless of losing the final, were awarded MVP and best goalkeeper of the tournament: the leftie Guillem Frigola and Unai Aguirre. As for the women’s category, Exeter’s goalkeeper Sophie Jackson was named best goalie, while Nadia Fernández, CN Sant Feliu player, was awarded the MVP trophy.

The countdown to the 3rd Turbo Cup has already started. Stay tuned!

During three days, the Montjuïc Olympic Pool turned into an authentic waterpolo party where players, coaches and fans enjoyed the morning and afternoon matches, and where a good music- which was borne by Red Bull and made it all even more pleasant-was not missing between the matches.

All of that in an unbeatable scene, offering spectacular views of the city of Barcelona, which captivated all foreign teams who also enjoyed the good weather.

How was the idea of organizing an international tournament?

I have worked with BIWPA since the inception of its Summer Camps in 2014 and 2015, but the ideas and projects never stopped and in September 2016, I proposed my intention to carry out any of the projects that had been raised in our meetings Cristina Marin general manager. Soon the idea of an international water polo tournament that I raised to Cristina became more than just an idea for me.

Youth is not a common category in tournaments …

One of the keys to successfully realize the project was the age of the participants. Youth is not a common category in national and international tournaments. However, it is a very interesting age to promote and develop as it is the last age group before the move to the senior level. It is always a highly motivated group that has no peer tournaments where level can be measured and can test themselves.

So far it’s been a successful call with teams in England, Italy, France and of course Catalunya …

The first reports published regarding the tournament created a lot of interest and team registering for the tournament have come from cities all over Europe. Players, coaches and delegates continue to send requests for information and most are enthusiastic about the project. Barcelona is a city with a strong power of attraction for both sporting and tourism. The BCN International Turbo Cup will be a spectacle.

The dates are suitable for teams can reach a little more ground balls season …

Another positive aspect is the timing, in September after the period of summer vacation, players participating in the tournament BCN Turbo Cup come to the competition just before the start of the league competition, is the ideal way to start the season.

What you will find participants?

The tournament will be held from 9 to 11 September, with five games being played at the municipal swimming pool Montjuic, one of the most symbolic parts of the city. The aim is to create an environment not only for sports but also maximum comfort, so players can share and enjoy their experiences.

What does it mean to you on a personal level take care of this tournament?

Personally directing this project is an ambitious challenge for me, water polo is my passion, and to organize this competition allows me to enjoy the atmosphere involving sixteen teams playing and sharing the experience of an international competition. Great European water polo powers such as Hungary and Italy will be represented among other countries. With all these different communities, the tournament is assured to be a sporting success. We are also mulling various options that will enhance the good atmosphere in the pool. It is a good chance to come for the inaugural tournament and to make the most of the three days in Barcelona.

BCN International Turbo Cup

BIWPA will organize the BCN International Turbo Cup from the 9th to the 11th of September in collaboration with Turbo, one of the most important water polo sponsors in the world.

It is an international tournament aimed at u18 boys, intended to be a future reference for all the clubs that want to prepare their players before the start of the new season.

We have teams already enrolled for the tournament: Szeged and Ferencvarosi (Hungary), Exeter (England), Monza (Italy), Cymru (Wales), Esslingen (Germany), BZ&PC Bodegraven (Netherland), Monza and Verona (Italy) and Real Náutico de VigoCNB, CN Rubí, CN Catalunya, Waterpolo Soller and CN Sant Feliú (Spain), have confirmed their participation and there are many teams who have expressed their interest.

The tournament shall take place in an amazing location: the Piscina Municipal de Montjüic, an Olympic outdoor swimming pool with panoramic views of Barcelona that provides a unique backdrop to the event.

BIWPA will provide a free daily transfer service for the teams staying in any of the 3 hotels suggested by the organization, in order to facilitate the transportation between the team’s accommodation and the pool. If any team requests transfers from the airport to their accommodation, there will be a service fee of 100€ each way.
